Objectives: The purposes of the study were to evaluate the clinical features and to investigate the underlying metabolic diseases as the risk factor of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
Method: We conducted a retrospective study of patients presenting to an academic tertiary care center for the management of sudden hearing loss within the past 10 years. We compared the therapeutic efficacy and complications of medical therapy according to underlying metabolic diseases, such as diabetus mellitus, essential hypertension, and renal failure.
Results: Groups with essential hypertension and with chronic renal failure tended to have a poor prognosis despite the same medial therapy. On the other hand, more complications developed from group with chronic renal failure.
Conclusion: Essential hypertension and chronic renal failure seem to be a risk factor of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. We suggest that alternate therapeutic modality, such as intratympanic steroid injection, should be considered in chronic renal failure patients suffering sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
